SYMPOSIUM

Constructing Place

Under the title of Constructing PlaceDislocates symposium will bring together artists, designers, architects, urban planners in the exploration of our conceptualization of space and the impact of emerging technologies upon our relationship with our surroundings. In a debate upon the components which formulate place and the shift in definitions which these are undergoing we will explore the terms under which we realize location and how technology can further locate us.

With an emphasis on the site specifics of place, a consideration of place as politically, culturally, socially and historically defined, the symposium seeks to evaluate our interaction with place, how place is encountered and how it is expressed and the new possibilities which new media may offer to this. With reference to the integration between art and environment our creative participation in our locality will be discussed along with an examination of how new technologies may promote this.

We will question how new media developments can be used in the realization of new spaces and assess the role of mediated space in our daily interactions and our locative awareness. This will include consideration of the increasingly ambiguous transition from one place to another in line with the fusing of multiple locations. Pointing towards the increasing merge of new technologies with the structure of our surroundings we will debate the quality of experience and communication of our contexts through new media strategies the new understandings which this may offer us but also the reduced framing and misconceptions which this may also promote.
